Hi there,
I’m looking at developing a project that I’d like to use to experiment with using LoRa. It involves making a sound map of the uni campus (UNSW). I’m thinking of a few SparkFun Pro modules with sound sensors? Possible or suggestions please on how best to approach this?

Hi Mke!

I recommend that you use the Pycom Lopy4 if you want to play around with Lora here in australia: [https://core-electronics.com.au/pycom-lopy4.html](https://core-electronics.com.au/pycom-lopy4.html)

We have tutorials on how to get your LoRa projects going for this device. Both in our [Pycom Tutorials](https://core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/pycom/), and our [The Things Network Tutorials](https://core-electronics.com.au/tutorials/the-things-network-ttn/).

You could use the [Lopy4](https://core-electronics.com.au/pycom-lopy4.html) with a [Pytrack Shield](https://core-electronics.com.au/pycom-pytrack-41971.html), and a sound sensor. Or use the [Expansion Board](https://core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/CE05545) with a separate GPS and sound sensor.

Pycom boards are very well supported and there is a ton of documentation available for them. The basic kit to get started is here:

You’ve got great LoRaWAN coverage at the Uni campus already. You could connect this to TTN by following our tutorial and be able to connect almost anywhere in the city for free, without needing to make your own gateway! There is a gateway on campus already!

Let me know if you have any further questions! I can offer as much help as you need to help you get your project off the ground!

Thanks Stephen,
Reassuring to know there’s some support out there.

What sound detector would you recommend for the Pycom-lopy4/expansion board?

Miles

Hey Miles,

The LoPy4 Supports most interfaces as well as 8 12-bit Analogue inputs, so something like [DFR’s Sound Sensor](https://core-electronics.com.au/analog-sound-sensor.html) should work well. You could also use a [microphone](https://core-electronics.com.au/analog-sound-sensor.html) if you wanted to collect more detail.

Like Clinton said, you could use just about any sensor you like. I think this is a good option:

It’s very well documented, and there are lots of examples for use. Keep in mind that this is a 5v sensor, so you will need a level shifter to use it safely with the Lopy4.
