Isn’t the wavelength of 915 MHz 328mm?

I’m not sure how 400mm is half-wave?

Hi Peter,

Between the bracket, fittings and some elbow room, the total height is 400mm

Hi @Graham,
Do you have any extension cables for the 50ohm coax? I need a cable about 10m long to go between this antenna and my Laird Sentrius Gateway.

Thanks
Jon

Is it possible to replace the RG58 cable with something like the LMR-400?

Hi Graham.
Your blurb does say height without bracket 840mm.
While we are here how is 90cm shorter than 840mm???

Hi Peter. Yes, it is 328mm (without end effect adjustment)

It is for about 375MHz.

In all fairness it may be called a full wavelength vertical but we don’t know what goes on inside that fibreglass tube. To get a gain of almost 6db there are probably several 1/2 wave centre fed dipoles connected as a co-linear array. 4 would probably do it and would account for the 840mm length.

Hey everyone,

The description on [the product page](https://core-electronics.com.au/high-gain-omni-outdoor-antenna-with-rp-sma-connector-915mhz-6dbi-lora-au915-as923.html) has just been updated (you may need to clear your browsers cachet o show the update), I’ve double-checked the 90cm antenna we have in-house to make sure all the specs are okay and confirmed they are, so the 840mm antenna page has just had a slight edit made!

Thanks for notifying us Bob 😄

2 thoughts here:

- Won’t the signal get lost in the 5meter cable?
- I imagine a xiao won’t be able to power this thing. what is recommended as a Meshcore repeater that has enough juice to make use of this?

Hey there, @Pixmusix,

While there would be some cable loss, it’s not enough to “lose” the signal entirely. The supplied 5 m lead is specified as 50 Ω RF100 low-loss coax rather than RG58. Any loss is offset by the benefits of reaching a clear, high point.

The antenna is also passive, so the XIAO wouldn’t be powering it. The If you’re using a low-power MeshCore repeater, like the [XIAO nRF52840 and Wio-SX1262 kit](https://core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/SS102010710), then the attached LoRa radio on the SX, and an SX1262 can provide up more than enough signal strength (up to 22 dBm).

You just need to ensure that the SMA cable has the correct polarity for the antenna. SMAs vs RP-SMAs confuse a lot of people.

I know what you mean, centre contact male or female, There are lots of people who may not.

I think “polarity” could be change to “sex” as Murphy’s law says that there will be lots of people associate this with Voltage polarity and wonder where the battery is. That would really be a can of worms.
Cheers Bob

Hey there, @Pixmusix,

It would connect to the end of the 5m antenna, no problem, but you are going to start seeing significant loss at this point. At 10m, you’re going to get around 5–6 dB of loss at 10m, on top of the designed loss from the 5m connector. It should still work for LoRa, but you’ll give back a fair chunk of the 6 dBi gain.

It’s also not really designed for weatherproof conditions, it’s more of an enclosure-feed cable than a long outdoor feeder. I wouldn’t leave a PVC RG58 jacket in full sun for years and expect it to last, much less rain.

How far is the mount from the Lora Module?

Hi Jane
If it is quality RG58 like Belden or similar the cable itself should be fine outdoors. I think the Belden specification sheet would give some info regarding this sort of thing. As for all the knock offs the jury might still be out here.

It is where the outer protective sheath is stripped back to fit a connector and the connector itself that will have a problem. This connection should be made within a weather proof enclosure or some weather proofing provided. Andrews used to supply such tape or “Denso” tape from plumbing suppliers is messy to use but very good. I just looked and this product is still available as “Denso Tape”. I still have what is left of a large roll and it has been in my shed for probably 25 plus years. Still good.

Hint: when using wear plastic gloves, it will get under fingernails and everywhere.
Cheers Bob

About 11 meters once I tidy up the cable. I have the grave of a radio antenna on my roof. I thought I could get it up there if I had more length. The box housing a wio tracker is on the side of my house.

Hey there,

If you have an antenna to scavenge, then making use of it is sensible. Is it possible to move the move the Wio Tracker box closer to the mast?

Otherwise, it may be worthwhile trying to find a custom length cable or terminate one yourself (although that could open up more issues with weather proofing).

The closest power-point is on the side of my house. I considered batteries on the roof with a solar panel, but we can his 45 degrees in the summer, and I’m pretty sure they would thermal runaway.

Hi Pix
Don’t know about Thermal Runaway but that 45º you mention would be shade figure. Out on the sun would be way hatter than that. Think closed car parked in the sun. I don’t know but does not a panel specs or data sheet mention some sort of Max. After all they are specially designed to sit in the sun for as long as possible so I think that if there is a Max number published it would be quite high.

I’ve kept the 5m cable on this thing and found a way to get the device closer.
It’s up nice and high.
I’m still getting a terrible packet deserialize rate.
I’m wondering if the cable on this thing is not so good and I’m losing like a db per meter.
How could I check my hypothesis?
