For Rd-03D. I am looking to house this outside. Firstly, do you have containers suitable? Can the waves go through glass or does it nothing in front of sensors? Thanks

Do you have any housing for the Rd-03D that is suitable outside?

Hi @Paul297164,

Welcome to the forum!

The [Rd-03D mmWave Multi-Human Position Sensor | Buy in Australia | CE10172 | Core Electronics](https://core-electronics.com.au/mmwave-sensor-rd03d-presence-detection-sensor.html) will be able to penetrate anything that isn’t conductive so glass will be no issue.

For an outdoor housing we stock [Plastic Project Box Enclosure Waterproof Clear Cover - 168 x 120 x 55 mm | Buy in Australia | FIT0723 | DFRobot | Core Electronics](https://core-electronics.com.au/plastic-project-box-enclosure-waterproof-clear-cover-6-61x4-72x-2-17-inch.html) that will be able to have the signal penerate the cover as well as keeping it dry.

Is this Rd-03D the same as [HLK-LD2450](https://www.hlktech.net/index.php?id=1157) ?

If so, it is supported by Home Assistant via [ESPHome](https://esphome.io/components/sensor/ld2450)

If not, you might like to see if there is any information on connecting, programming and using it - because the linked datasheet looked to be all about the hardware specs.

Hey @Donald23173,

I had a look at the LD2450, and it looks pretty darn similar. From the board layout, to how it operates. I had a brief look at the UART output format and from what I can remeber, it appears to be the same or very similar.

I guess that it could be a drop-in replacement, but it would need to be tested so I can’t say with 100% certainty. The deep dive into the UART format is not in our write-up, but you can find some in [this guide](https://www.electroniclinic.com/rd-03d-mmwave-radar-multi-human-tracking-with-distance-speed-positioning/).

If you do get it to work, let us know! Curious if it will!

As Jaryd says, it _looks_ pretty much identical. I use [ESPHome](https://esphome.io/) firmware generator, and I found [comments in the ESPHome forum](https://community.home-assistant.io/t/hlk-ld2450-initial-experiments-to-connect-to-homeassistant/578878/470) (dated Jan-2024)

> Sorry I am doing packet parsing in C++ or JS, never used RD-03 with esphome, But I guess LD2450 component should work out of box, as my C++ parsing is exactly the same for both, with less config options for RD-03.

Which suggests that the same firmware might work for either board.

Today I see that there are ESPHome components for both LD2450 and RD-03D. Both return position details for up to 3 targets.
However the ESPHome LD2450 component has a lot more controls - adding 3 zones. Honestly configuration looks so much more complicated - but we don’t have to configure all the options that we don’t need.

| RD-03D | LD2450 |
| --- | --- |
| Binary sensor for has-target | Binary sensor for has-target |
| Binary sensors for has\_moving\_target and has\_still\_target | Binary sensors for target1, target2 and target3 |
| for each target\_N: integer sensors for x, y, speed, angle, distance, resolution | for each target\_N: sensors for x, y, speed, angle, distance, resolution |
| | for each zone\_N: target\_count, still\_target\_count, moving\_target\_count |
| | Switches for: bluetooth and multi\_target |
| | Integer number for: presence\_timeout and for each zone: x1, y1, x2 and x2 |
| | Button for: factory\_reset and restart |
| | Text sensors for: version, mac\_address, and for each target: direction |
| | Select for: baud-rate and zone\_type |

I have 3 nightlight type uses, so I might try both the AiThinker RD-03D and HLKtech LD2450 (including RD03D with the LD2450 component). Worst case is that the bedroom unit only needs to see feet moving from under the bed 😉

Don’t hold your breath though … I am an A-grade procrastinator so it could take quite a while before ready to announce my results.

I haven’t tried the RD-03D yet, but I was impressed with all the positional information available from the LD2450’s ESPHome component - great to track 3 persons within the range … but overkill for my simple night-light application.

Comparing all the many LD24xx models, I’m thinking LD2410C might be best for a simple night-light. I already bought a LD2410B - whose specs seemed ideal until I saw how tiny it is. Small will be good for a night-light … except that I don’t trust my soldering for attaching such close small pins.
