Upgrade of Raspberry Pi Zero with camera

Hi Bob, Blayden et al.
Plenty of options to consider. I’ll go with using some clear glass and moving the Pi closer to the glass. Here is a shot of the setup (excuse messy workbench).

Hi George
Shouldn’t be too hard to glue a glass panel to that. Move the camera right up to the glass and it will be a bit more forgiving when it gets a bit grubby.

When using materials in that sort of environment be careful of the Sun. Can be surprisingly destructive when it sets its mind to be so. I would question that perspex lid. How long has it been in situ now. Might be OK, you would have to look up the specs on the box. If it is likely to damage you could go with a non clear lid on an outdoor rated box and cut a hole in that for the glass.

Anything you use here should be able to withstand full sunlight or you will find yourself re building in a few months. Old Sol can be pretty savage.
If you are using any cable ties they need to be black.
Cheers Bob

Hi George,
Looks great. A messy workbench shows you’ve been hard at work.
To follow the fisheye lens discussion, a glass or plastic dome could also be good to avoid the corners of the box.
I am not familiar with how the lens works but thinking about why the lens has the range it does, Its not taking square photos most of the time so it doesn’t need to be a 180 degree range in both axes. There may be a better reason but that’s how I think of it.

Thanks Bob & Jack.
The weather station has been in place since Sept 2021. The case I bought from Core as an “weatherproof box”. I’m going to order another Pi Zero and work on installing new weather software on that. I’ll also experiment with the camera, lenses and the suggestions made here.

Thanks for all the support - and awesome forum. Our site is here

Hi Jack
I am scratching the old memory box here. The Fish Eye lenses are not new. From memory you point the camera straight up so the centre is a view of sky with the 360º view all around with the centre being “up” and the surrounding scene in a circle so to view everything in perspective you actually have to rotate the pic so the bottom of the pic is always right way up. A true “Fish Eye” (or Rabbit which also has 360º vision).
I will see if I can dig out a sample pic from somewhere later.

Sorry to go off-topic, but I feel there should be a a"Spaghetti" award for the most naturally untidy work area (I mean, not artificially created)… my work areas are tidy once a year.

Haha - mine looks worse now and SWMBO doesn’t view this as “normal”.

Hi All
Found this fish eye classic with the camera looking straight up.

Bob, they look great but not very practical for my use.

Hi George
When I looked I didn’t think they would be.
If you look up some fish eye images here

you have some pretty impressive effects when the lens is used horizontally like a normal camera.
Just for interest only.

Hi Blayden
Had a bit of a look around for Fish Eye info.
Here is a link to a pretty informative article in plain language.
https://photographyproject.uk/camera-basics/fisheye-lens-complete-guide/
Based on this I think the lens you linked, CE09491, would be termed a “Diagonal” fish eye lens where the diagonal is 180+ and the horizontal and vertical angles are somewhat less.
Hope this link works
Cheers Bob
