Hi Guys
I’m new here. I have a CAD/CAM routing table that has been communicating with my PC via a proprietory converter, 2015 vintage, that is now U/S and replacements not available. The existing has a female USB(B) connection on the PC side, has optical isolation and a female D9 connection on the table side. I haven’t found this layout for sale anywhere online but there appear a number of possibilities with screw terminals instead of D9 socket, such as the Waveshare WS-23949 available from Core Electronics. My problem is that this item accepts 3 single core cables (2x comms and 1 x PE) BUT when I look at my male D9 fitting coming from the table it has 4x cables attached and I believe one is carrying power (5V). I assume the comms section of the PCB on the table requires this so 1) is there replacement available anywhere that would accept 4x outputs on the Rs485 side OR 2) Is there a workaround with the above Waveshare device or 3) if I bought the Waveshare and did not connect the 4th lead is communication likely to happen or not.
Cheers, Tim
I think you need to positively identify those 4 leads. You have to do that anyway in order to connect whichever adapter you are going to use.
I would be very surprised if the extra lead was a 5V supply to the control board in the table. The more likely arrangement is that the control board (which must have a high-current DC supply for motors etc) will have its own 5V regulator on board for its logic. So if the extra wire is 5V then it could be supplied from the controller board in order to power components in the proprietary converter. The other possibility is that it is linked to something within the converter, such as a logic signal to control Enable on the comms device, which might get a little complicated. If you have a part number for that converter the on-line documentation may be available to confirm the wiring. Or perhaps a part number for the controller board, for the same reason.
Hi Tim
As an added query as well as Jeff’s re device model numbers.
Is this 4 “cables” as in pairs (total 8 wires) or 4 “wires” (4 single wires).
You hint at both in your description. I strongly suspect 4 “wires”.
This suggests that it could be RS232 which is a 3 wire system. If we knew which pins of the DE9 (note “DE”, “DB” is incorrect) it might be some clue. RS232 is TX, RX, Logic ground.
Pin 2 RX data, Pin 3 TX data, Pin 5 Logic ground.
On the other hand it could well be RS485 simplex or half duplex which is a single pair balanced line(2 wires). Not sure of any “Standard” RS485 connections for DE9 connector.
Cheers Bob
Hi @Tim295537,
Welcome to the forum!
Sorry to hear your trusty converter has failed.
If you can share photos or pinout details of your existing cable and converter, it may help us find the best replacement or wiring solution.
Thanks for all these suggestions. I’ve been out all arvo but will get onto it tomorrow and post again.
Cheers
