To summaries when I had the hat installed and was using WIFI I found that the OS would freeze not long after the Pi5 booted, and the task bar would disappear and the screen would go white, sometimes if you give it 5 mins it could recover but that would be rare, its pretty much unusable
Through troubleshooting I moved the hat to the side so its not sitting close to the WIFI chip to see if that made a difference and I was amazed that it works okay! No crashing! I find the WIFI is pretty slow on the PI not sure if that is part of the issue, I am only around 5 Meters from my Unifi AC Pro.
I can also run it okay without the hat on top screwed down and while the PI is running I can put the hat on correctly and in about 2-3 mins the OS starts to crash, does crash quicker if I change WIFI networks.
Using ethernet I have no issues at all with the hat installed with screws.
I am using the M.2 that came with my Ally because I updated that M.2 in the Ally.
I am not sure what could be causing this issue as moving the hat seems to be okay so I see this as a design flaw possibly? The PI5 is a 16GB and the powersupply is under 3 weeks old.
this is an odd one for sure. I have set up this Hat on a Pi 5 16GB and haven’t been able to make it crash while messing around with the wifi so hopefully this is contained to your particular setup.
It’s a bit hard to tell from your photos but do you have one of the supplied pink thermal pads between the cooler and the wifi chip?
Are you booting from an SD card or from that SSD?
Maybe try disconnecting and reconnecting the PCIe cable at both ends in case a loose connection is causing some kind of issue.
Hey Samuel, thanks for the reply, I have put the thermal pads on the chips in the photo I was only supplied 3 but possibly I put them on the wrong chips, let me know haha
I am booting from the SSD I dont have a SD card connected and i have re-imaged the Pi twice to see if it was a software issue
I have reconnected the PCIe to the PI a few times but I can try seeing if I can reconnect the end that is connected to the hat it doesnt look to be easy to remove, do you know how?
From your original post, was the speed test with or without the hat installed? If it was without it installed that speed result is rather low, and ruling out that the entire network was running at that same speed, the Pi should have similar speeds to other devices connected via WiFi.
Definitely sounds like something is up with your setup, if you want to either reply to your order confirmation or shoot over an email to support@coreelectronics.com.au with your order number we can get this sorted.
Hey, I did some more troubleshooting by booting off a SD card whilst leaving the hat on and it seems to work okay it but if I take the heatsink off the m.2 adaptor and put it where it would be on the PI5 it stops working so its making me think there is a issue with the ribbon, I reseated the ribbon on both ends and made sure its connected correctly and I am having the same issue but if I move the m.2 so the ribbon is somewhat stretched it works okay, could this be that the ribbon is broken?
