OK I’m done - unfortunately none of the suggestions worked. This morning I got my hands on a HC-SR04 cheapo sensor and the setup worked perfectly with the different variations of code above for the RPi.

Just a final update on this project - swapped out the HC-SR04 for the replacement waterproof sensor which arrived today, worked right out fo the box. Everything is now fully functional and ready to go. Thanks for the quick replacement of the non-functioning sensor!
