Weekly Maker News November Week 3

Welcome to our weekly maker news where we wrap up some fun and interesting stories in the maker world from the last few weeks. The video will come out on Fridays, but we are posting a topic here on Wednesdays to post the video’s sources and to collect any news from the community to potentially include in next week’s as well as just open up general discussion.

This week we looked at:

The overclocking wizard SkatterBencher has set a world record for the highest overclock on a Raspberry Pi coming in at 3.6 GHz on the Pi 5, achieving a cool 50% boost in clock speed over the default 2.4 GHz speed. Unfortunately, if you are looking to run your Pi at these speeds you’ll need to get your hands on some liquid nitrogen and modify one of the Pi’s crystal oscillators on. Is it practical, no, Is it cool? Yes, -196 degrees cool.

Something more practical, a maker by the name of Volos Projects has put together a really outside-the-box project of using an ESP32 S3 as a word processor? Using an LCD with an ESP32, the project can plug in a regular USB keyboard and work on text files like a low-feature text editor and save these files to a MicroSD card. This is just a brilliant use of some low-power hardware and he has all the resources to build one yourself if you are chasing a weekend project, very tempting.

And Prusa has announced a new line of flagship 3d printers, the Prusa Core One. Set to launch in January 2025, it is as the name suggests, a core XY printer coming in at $1199 USD assembled and $950 as a kit. With features such as an enclosed chamber, a bigger build volume, and what looks like a great deal of repairability and interchangeability with mk4 and XL parts, it may be the horse they need to compete against Bambu Lab’s P1 series, we will just need to see.

If you have any news from the maker world, feel free to post it below and we may include it in next week’s video, until then we will see you next week!
