Alternatives to HC-SR04 distance sensor for Pi?

Hi Core people
We’re putting together a package for our students to make path following robots. The HC-SR04 distance sensor runs on 5V so we need to insert resistors between the sensor and the Raspberry Pi. Is there any distance sensor available that can be directly connected to the Pi?

Hi Peter,

Welcome to our forum!

What you’re after is called a logic level converter to interface between the ultrasonic sensor and the Pi, which should take care of all the conversions required to use a 5V device with the 3.3V GPIO of a Pi. It’s also quite easy to solder together with some pins or wires which should give the students some practice. :slightly_smiling_face:

Otherwise, there also exist some substitutes which can get down to 3V, but optimally, you’d want to go with the real HC-SR04 to make sure that it’s suitable for your bots.

If there’s anything else that you need please let me know. Have a great day Peter!

Thanks Bryce. Helpful info.

You’re welcome Peter,

Let me know if you need any other help with the project and I’ll see what we can do :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
