How to Remotely Access Your Pi the Easy Way | Raspberry Pi Connect

Hey peeps, got another one for ya! If you haven’t seen it yet Raspberry Pi has a remote connection service that allows you to access a Pi via shell and screen sharing from a browser. Really simple and easy service to use, and we have a guide for complete beginners on it here: “How to Remotely Access Your Pi the Easy Way | Raspberry Pi Connect”

Being able to remotely access a Raspberry Pi is a handy ability as they often find themselves in locations that might be hard for us humans to reach, let alone plug in a keyboard, mouse and monitor. While there are many different methods of remotely…

It works well (not as fast as direct ssh or vnc) but remote screen access only works on Pi4/5 - although remote shell access works; this may not be the case if you haven’t activated VNC access on Pi3 family - which forces X11.

Thanks for your guide on setting up Pi connect which was very helpful. I have have it all working on my Raspberry Pi 5 Model B 8GB except the screen sharing part.
I can connect Ok when accessing from my laptop remotely and selecting the Screen share option but only getting a grey screen. I can see the cursor moving on the Raspberry Pi’s local screen when I move the mouse on my laptop. The shell remote connection all works fine. Additionally accessing the Raspberry pi on my local network using TigerVNC all works well.
Any suggestions as to how to remedy the grey screen when accessing via Connect?

Hey @Roger131018, welcome to the forums!

The grey screen sounds like it may be a browser-based problem. Could you tell us more about the setup on your laptop?

What browser and OS are you using? The most likely problem is some kind of compatibility or memory issue associated with your browser.

I did manage to find this thread which describes a similar problem to the one you are experiencing.

It may be worth having a look through the suggestions offered there to see if any of them work for you. From what I can find this may be caused by a port conflict as the newer Pi OS versions come with both realVNC and wayVNC software. Disabling one of these looks to allow the other to work as expected.

Thanks for the help on that. I did find with some further research after my first post that it may be an incompatible screen resolution with realVNC that may be causing the grey screen.
So not being keen to start mucking around with config files as mentioned in the article, I thought that maybe the local screen I had plugged into my Pi was forcing the Pi to use an incompatible setting with realVNC.
As I really didn’t use the Pi local screen and keyboard much (mainly used TigerVNC on my laptop), I unplugged the local monitor from the Pi then rebooted it and then tried Pi Connect again remotely via my Iphone hotspot and issue fixed, no more grey screen and the Pi GUI all visible.
So probably changing the local screen resolution to something else that is compatible with realVNC may also sort the issue but I haven’t pursued this as I only intend using Pi Connect when away on holidays.
