Pluggable terminal headers?

Model train layout. Have auxiliary control modules, each with 12-14 screw terminals.

Normally, connect screw terminals to wires that lead to various accessories (turnout motors).

However, if I need to remove the control module to test / reprogram it, this means unscrewing a LOT of wires.

Solution: connect modules and accessories to pluggable terminal headers. Thus can easily unplug module to take it to test area without needing to unscrew lots of connectors. Test area has similar connectors for testing.

Problem: not sure what connectors to use.

  • Connecting to accessories: prefer screw headers
  • Connecting to control module: screw / solder / pre-wired OK. Just don’t want lots of exposed wires. Idea is that these will stay “always” connected to modules. Can’t PCB mount the modules.
  • Connecting to test rack: can use same headers as accessories, but also advantageous to be able to use smaller headers

Prefer 18-24 AWG wire. Anything bigger is too big, anything smaller isn’t good for brief 24V / 1A currents.

This 10-Way Terminal & Socket | Sparkfun PRT-22461 | Core Electronics Australia is almost right.

  • Prefer 12-way
  • Receptor socket has explosed pins. Either need receptor with terminal pins or some sort of sheath.

Hi Andrew
Have a look at a brand called “Phoenix Contact”. Not sure about the present day but they used to have what I think you are after.
You might have to try Element 14 or RS Components to get some ideas.

Hi Andrew.
If you have 3D printing skills you can make what you’re after. I designed a pluggable mounting bloc for a Nano. I wrote it up in a forum topic that can be found by searching on “Nano monobloc”.
