Query here - if anyone has started or completed setting up an intercom system for the home?
Welcome to the forum!
Audio transmission is possible with Meshtastic, due to limitations in bandwidth though its not possible to use it on sub-GHz networks, there is a write up on how it can be done on the Meshtastic website.
I would be possible using ESP-NOW, and there is this guide on setting up an ESP32 Walkie Talkie that should point you in the right direction.
While this will be somewhat location specific, lora normally has bandwidth restrictions and is meant to only have short packets with low duty cycles. i.e. be fair to everyone around you. (So if you are going to use lora, check the impact it will have on the air and others, as well as your local rules of use).
ESP now will be on the 2.4Ghz, which does have a more generous usage allowance.
All that said, Im sure there would be some simple analog transmitter. i.e. press the button, transmitter powers up, all audio is picked up with the mic and transmitted to the other radio that then just dumps into an amp… no overhead for ADC and DAC at each end.
