Read moreI guess I must have missed it … do you have a USB-C PLUG Breakout - Vertical ? Ie, like this, but with a USB-C plug instead of a socket ? I am only interested in the power lines, so USB2 standard is better for me (fewer tiny header pins).
I note there is USB MicroB Plug Breakout Board (SKU: BOB-10031)
Hey @Donald23173
You’d be looking for Adafruit USB Type C Plug Breakout | Buy in Australia | ADA5978 | Core Electronics!
Close, but not quite. I was looking at placing my ESP32-S3-devkitC (those overly large ones) into a more professional-looking but small enclosure; hence wanting to minimise the space normally taken by the plugs housing and cable sticking out the end of the ESP32 devkit.
The Adafruit breakout does allow the cable to be attached at the side, but still needs space at the end of the plug for the PCB part. However if the PCB is at right angle to the plug (as in the Sparkfun Vertical modules) it would save even more space at the end of my ESP32.
Don’t worry. I have gone back to using a recycled plastic tub from xmas LED fairy lights as my enclosure … so space is not a problem. But it is a curious gap in Sparkfun’s product range.
Hi Donald,
Is there any reason you wouldnt want to go for the 5V header pins? Free (provided you have some spare Female jumpers) and won’t require soldering except on the other side.
Excellent question ! Only that I haven’t tried doing that yet … I realise I think of USB as power supply (not data) ! And maybe that I’m afraid I might get the 5V header wire confused with the identical looking 3V3 wires.
Hey @Donald23173,
Is this the sort of thing you are looking for?
Hi Donald,
Fair enough reasons to hold you back - For this project it might be worth a shot tho!
I’ve mixed them up many times trying to move to quick, nowadays I like colour coding jumper wires for fewer mix-ups.
Red 3.3V
White 5V
Black GND
other distinct colours for data and other signals.
Then if I’m using those ribbons, either seal up or make looms from the other colours or chuck them.
Yeah, I try, then I think I went over the top.
Got some heat shrink for my dymo rhino label machine.
I know what’s on my Christmas list this year.
WOW !!!
As it happens I have just been looking at getting a labelling machine, however this justifies looking at another option…
Are you using a special Heat Shrink type of tape ? Yes, I found that Bunnings have it … but it’s for “any DYMO Industrial labeling tool”.
DymoLabel (I assume a reseller) have Dymo Rhino 4200 Industrial Labeller for $165.00; with regular tapes starting at $37.50 and the Heat Shrink for $55.50 from their website (presumably plus postage). Rather out of my budget for my hobby usage
The Brother PTE300VP will handle heatshrink labels, and is somewhat cheaper than the Dymo. I am sure there are others. Note that the heatshrink cartridges have much less label than the standard tape cartridges - 1.5M vs 8M for the Brother. I guess it’s a question of how much they can fit in a cartridge, with the heatshrink being much thicker.
A trick worth trying is to wrap a standard label around the wire and then put clear heatshrink over the top. For hobby stuff it’s much cheaper than using the heatshrink labeller, and you can use the heatshrink that is best suited to the size of cable.
Yeah, I was using some of the other industrial labels from the rhino series. The one I have now I can use PC software to create a long string of labels and send to the labeler to print, then cut to size post print, else you waste way to much at that price.
Since I already had the labeler, then the cost of the actual heat shrink, while $$ is not too bad as I only use low volumes of it. I also keep my eyes open for specials/deals that come around from time to time.
