Wanting to seek advise, would be grateful if anyone can share some light.
I just got one of this below
018-USB-PL2303HX - USB to TTL Serial UART RS232 Adaptor (PL2303TA)
Planning to use dongle to fix brick NVR by flashing firmware via putty.
I have Windows 11 pro 64 bit machine.
Driver installed automatically without any issue.
Using Putty, I try to connect to the specific COMx port as per device manager with baut 115200.
When putty run, there is nothing on the window, just blank black window, havent connect the NVR yet, just want to make sure the dongle working.
am I correct to expect there is connection showing on Putty window even when I am not connecting the NVR yet?
I dont like the way to product is worded. UART/TTL is very different to RS232 at the physical layer. e.g. A UART would be 0-Vcc with 0 = 0v and 1 = Vcc. RS232 on the other hand has +RS232 Voltage (can vary, lets say 15V) as a 0 and -15V (in this example) as 1. If you run UART into RS232 port it wont work, nor visa versa.
A USB-UART would be used to connect at TTL/UART levels and need to match that of the target. A USB-RS232 would be running at RS232 voltages and signals and would be connected to another RS232 device.
If there is no device on the end of the wire, then no, putty by default wont show you anything. Putty, by default will simply send the data to the remote device, that remote device can then chose to echo back (normal) or not (e.g. when you enter a password). So to ensure its working you need a device on the end of it.
Is the NVR (?) you are connecting to an RS232 or UART/TTL ?
Hi Michael,
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my enquiry.
The NVR is Hikvision 7604, it has UART/TTL.
So I also ordered this cable below and connect them to the NVR, and the other pin to the USB-PL2303HX.
CAB-18080 - Breadboard to JST-ZHR Cable - 4-pin x 1.5mm Pitch
Being refered from ipcamtalk forum, I ordered the cable accoridngly and try to connect this to the usb-dongle, following the connector as guided by the image (from ipcamtalk).
When connecting, the Putty returning blank, so I am not sure whether my setup is incorrect, the dongle has issue, or the JST cable is fault, or my connection arrangement between dongle cable to JST cable is incorrect.
The image attached connection is not mine, but i use the color code guide base on the image.
Hey, @Suria310761, glad to see you came to the forum.
It’s a bit hard to say for certain what could be going wrong without an actual picture of the setup. Could you please link to the guide you’re using so we can get a better sense of what could be going wrong.
In addition, it might be a bit of a tight squeeze, but would it be possible for you to connect the RX and TX cables from the USB directly to the NVR’s TX and RX?
My apology for the trouble, as I upload the photo and double check, I realise the red part of the connector was incorrect, I have adjusted the connection and now its working.
My apology for the inconvenient and thank you for your kind help, sincerely appreciate it.
