10 inch rackmount

Took a while to source all the parts, but the result was worth it.
Perfect fit for a small home lab, with PoE too.

Hey @david16997,

Very clean! It’s always nice when you can source cables that are exactly the correct length.

Well done!

Hi Samuel

David probably made them. Not too difficult with the correct tooling.
The inly criticism I would have here is if that is truly a “patch panel” then each cable should be able to reach from anywhere to anywhere. If they are always going to stay where they are then all good.

Nah. I bought a 10 pack of 15 cm cables. Faster and better than custom made.
The cables are not intended to be in fixed positions.
If (or when) any special length is needed, yes I’ll make a custom cable.

Interesting that the cables between the Arris modem, Edgerouter-X, and Ubiquiti switch are all 15cm’s.
AFAIK the “standard” or required minimum length of ethernet between powered devices is supposed to be 500mm.
Seems to be no matter, as this kit is working nicely.

Hi David, the min length cable is an ongoing debit. (I was tempted so comment before, but was keen not to cause a debate here that would take away from the acheivement).

I have always read the cable guidelines as best practice, that if followed will minimize the chance of something causing issues.
i.e. if it passes the tests at the speeds its running, then all good.

While I have never found an actual minimum spec. I have seen the 500mm comment and its around connecting between two endpoints. 500mm was long enough that “if” there was reflections they have a better chance to dissipate in cables 500mm or longer such that they will cause less/no real impact.

So yeah, if all the gear is working OK and if the port error counts are 0, then all good.

Hi david, All

Michael is pretty close to the mark here

A bit cheeky though. If the cables are correctly terminated the length would not matter.
Fix a problem at its cause. Having a minimum length in case there is something wrong is only a “band aid” solution.
