I totally agree - IMO this device really needs a PIO driver, to take the burden off the main CPU
Like I mentioned above I was thinking of starting a sub process on the second core to keep the display refreshed. Let’s face it how many of us have bothered to use the other processor core on a pico. 
I found a need once where I kept my main process waiting for events and user input then published information on a web server using the other core. Worked no problem.
