Can the Pimoroni SATA Hard Drive to USB Adapter power this?

Hi there, I was wondering if the Pimoroni SATA Hard Drive to USB Adapter SKU: ADP001 can power a blu ray burner, specifically the LG model BH12KS38, it has on it that its 5V / 12V 1.5 A/ 1.5A?

Thanks
~Nikolai

Hey Nikolai,

It appears that the limiting factor in this case will be the Pi as oppose to the SATA cord which should be capable of the 5V 1.5A requirement. The issue is that most Pi (The Pi 3 for example) are limited in current that they can supply to the USB port. As found in the Pi 3 Raspberry Pi Foundation Documentation “There are 4 USB ports, If each port can give maximum 500mA”. What kind of setup do you intend to use with the SATA hard drive adapter?

Oh i dont intend to use it with a pi i intend to use it with my laptop and if necessary wall plug to usb power adapter for the power cable

Hey Nikolai,

In the USB 1.0 and 2.0 specs, a standard downstream port is capable of delivering up to 500mA, with USB 3.0, it moves up to 900mA. The charging downstream and dedicated charging ports provide up to 1,500mA. USB 3.1 bumps throughput up to roughly equivalent with first-generation Thunderbolt, it supports power draw of 1.5A and 3A over the 5V bus.

If you can find out which USB ports the PC you’re using has and the max current rating specified by the supplier (as they can limit it) you should be able to figure out if it will be able to supply enough current!
