DMM suggestions

Hi all.

I’m looking for recommendations on a DMM to replace my 30yo Fluke 77 Series 2 DMM.

The 77 still works but is probably past its use by date. Intended use is home automation and general home maintenance. For the HA micro controller stuff the DMM has got to read DC mA to single digits.

DMM’s I’ve looked at thus far (Wildly different pricing!):

I am or was a sparkie back in the day so I do have a clue how to use a DMM safely.

Cheers.

Hi Mark
I have a couple of suggestions.
UNI-T model UT71B. This is a very good DMM. I have had it for some years but the resistance ranges failed. I still keep it as a second DMM when needed. A small metal part broke off the range switch this forms part of the internal PCB. Current is 10A max but with a resolution of 1mA on the A range. This has the very nice feature of logging readings. It was supplied with purpose built logging software but I have use it with other display and logging packages. The connection to a PC is via an optically isolated device which slides into the top with a USB type A at the PC end.

Multicomp Pro Model MP730624. Current is 20A max once again with 1mA resolution. Purchased from Element 14 at a very reasonable sub$100 from memory. This is my newer instrument. No logging function (that I can find)

Another very useful instrument that may interest you is a UNI-T small AC/DC clamp meter. Non invasive measurement. Scales of 2A, 20A, 200A. Happily measures mA in 2A scale with a 1mA (or could be 0.1mA, don’t remember) resolution. I checked once and if you carefully position the wire in the centre of the clamp it is surprisingly accurate.

I also have a UNI-T 30MHz function generator which has proven to be pretty good. Lower frequency and resolution of 1µHz which I think is more of a marketing statement than usefulness.
Help this helps

Thanks Bob. That Multicomp Pro Model MP730624 looks pretty good for $115.

Hi Mark
Yes it is. I think I paid a bit under $100 when I bought it. Even with postage it is still pretty good value and if from Element 14 you will still have it within the time scale even if it is coming from UK. I think they must have their own air courier service.

Another attractive feature is it is supported by calibration services which would be required if used for Govt or military use.

I had forgotten about the bluetooth. Must look into that.

The UNI-T one may be discontinued now as it is quite a long time since I purchased it.
Cheers Bob
