GPS module on a Pi5

Hi,

Does anyone have a link to instructions for installing a GPS module on a Pi5?

Please note that my module is not a usb device.

I am happy with the wiring bit. I have seen tutorials etc re the Pi4, but these do not work for the Pi5.

At this stage, all I wish to do is see the simple gps sentences in the terminal. More complex stuff will come later.

Any help appreciated,
Loffy

Welcome Brian!

What GPS module do you currently have? There are a range of ways to setting them up - are you getting any errors?

Liam,

I am using a Mateksys GPS & COMPASS module M8Q-5883.

The module appears to be working (solid red power LED and flashing blue position fix LED).

I am not getting any gps NMEA 0183 sentences when I run either gpsmon or cgps -s in the terminal.

I am a newbie in this world so I have probably missed something in setup though I admit I have not found any instructions specific to the Pi5 (only Pi4 docs found).

Regards,
Brian (Loffy)

I know nothing of Pi5, but plenty about GPS modules. The output of your module is serial TTY, A brief look at serial input to the Pi5 indicates it isn’t the same as the Pi4. The Pi5 can have multiple serial interfaces. This video may (or may not) help https://youtu.be/27p4XHE3iyw?feature=shared

Hi Brian,

You have some solid looking resources here from @Alan73922 and @lia262073. Let us know how you go!

Alan,

Thanks. I will look at that either tonight or over the weekend.

Brian

Lia,

Thanks,

I have tried that one. It looks like it doesn’t work for the Pi5.

I am on another track which looks like it will work. I’ll know over the weekend.

Brian
