Hat not appearing in Roon as an audio device

I’ve upgraded from a Pi 2 to a Pi 3 installed in my audio streamer. When the new Pi card is installed the hat is not seen as an audio device in Roon. When I put the old card in it works fine. I can get Roon to see the Pi 3 if I select the Raspberry Pi setting in the software (RoPieeeXL) but if I select the hat it doesn’t show up. I use exactly the same software and settings for the Pi 3 and Pi 2. One works the other doesn’t. Any thoughts?

Hi Nigel,

Have you tried reflashing the image? Do you also have a link to the HAT you are using?

I have re-flashed the SD card. Same result, works with the old Pi not with the new. I can select the hat in the Roon settings of RoPieeeXL via a web browser.

Ok, so after using 3 different types of software and 2 brand new Pi 3B+ I can duplicate the fault exactly. Hat is recognised with Pi2 but not with Pi3 -

See log below:

Oct 13 02:24:06 ropieeexl kernel: wm8804 1-003b: Failed to read device ID: -121

I’m stumped as to why upgrading from a Pi2 to a Pi3 would cause this to happen.
Any thoughts?

Hi Nigel,

What HAT were you using that isnt being detected? This sounds very much like a software issue and something not being ported correctly between the Roon image for the Pi 2 v Pi 3.
Could you please send through a link to the HAT you have along with a photo of your Pi by itself and setup?

Reading into your issues a bit more are you using a HiFiBerry HAT? A quick power verification can be found here: https://support.hifiberry.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/201490832-New-HiFiBerry-won-039-t-start

Liam.

Hi Liam,
Here is a link to the streamer I’m using

I have also attached some photos

Hi Nigel,

With a custom bit of kit like that and a nice price tag, I’d be getting in touch with the mob that sold you the audio setup to debug. From the other topic it seems like the Pi boots at least but I couldn’t find any pointers as to what interface the HAT you are using has, I2C, I2S, etc.

They have a contact us section that mentions that they can do testing and custom jobs so would be worth seeing if they can remotely dignose the issue (Note there are a few low level differences with the Pi 2 vs Pi 3, being completely different silicon which is well above my knowledge).

Thanks Liam, I spent nearly 3 hrs via remote support with them last night. Went through several scenarios, different software, directly connecting to my modem. All of which ended up with the same outcome. I’ve asked them to send me a new hat and outboard module as I can’t think that it would be anything else. They have the same streamer running in their showroom with a Pi 3 and customers that run the same setup without any problems. It’s a bit of a mystery???
