I bought an RC- 0516 sensor thinking I could solder tails on but it appears I need
a 5 pin header. Would you kindly advise what I need?

Hey there, @Michael313308,

It’s sometimes hard to find the exact number of pins you need for your headers, so it’s often useful to grab something like these Break Away Male Headers which you can snap off to the exact number of pins that you need.

Why ?? I would think it would be perfectly acceptable to solder wires directly to the board. It would be preferable in some cases as it removes the temptation to plug headers into a breadboard which has been the subject of discussion in the not too distant past.

If your soldering skills are OK the wires would be easily removable if required.

Using headers does give you the flexibility of connecting with links that have female connectors fitted. But if your fitting is reasonably permanent I would think soldering would be the better option.

As Jane said above you can by 40 pin strips and cut or break the length you need.
