G’day all. I am new to the Pi world so please excuse my basic language. I was fascinated around the possibilities of installing an open source computer into your own car. I have just about finished installing a Pi4B with dual touch screens into my Datsun. My limited research has seen people using it as a media player, hooking up a reversing camera and also using other OS to link to the cars CAD. Yes my Datsun has a CAD as it is basically an old shell sitting on a modern drive train. The reason for the forum post was to learn what kind of weird and wonderful installs users may have worked on incorporating a raspberry pi into their car. This will also open a network for myself should I like to try and attempt a similar project. Thanks for reading.
Hi Stuart
Media playing and reversing camera/parking aids should be OK.
I think anything that interferes with the basic designed operation or safety systems would be heavily frowned on by the licensing authorities.
I don’t think there would be anything wrong with monitoring your car’s vital signs as long as you do it as a passenger and not a heavily distracted driver.
Sounds interesting
Cheers Bob
Thanks Bob. Acknowledge the safety element. Even if it only has basic functions I’m just excited about installing a computer into a car that was built in the early 70s
Hi Stuart
Something new for the car too I think. Electronic ignition was probably just becoming popular then I think.
Cheers Bob
If your modern drivetrain is OBD-II compatible, you can connect the Pi to your car’s On-Board Diagnostics port using a USB or Bluetooth OBD-II adapter. With software like PyOBD or Torque, you can display real-time vehicle data such as speed, engine temperature, RPMs, and fault codes on one of your touch screens. It’s a great way to integrate a digital dashboard into your Datsun.
Here is an OBD ii GPS tracker that you may find interesting:
Does anyone have experience or know some good links/guidance on using apple CarPlay through a Pi 4B?
From what I’ve seen on this this sort of setup relies on Wireless CarPlay adapters
Two main ways of doing it are setting up an Android app on top of Linage OS the Pi or using this React-CarPlay program
More info on Using React-Carplay can be found here.
