Re-purpose old BP monitor

Hi all

I have this 20yr old monitor and I feel there is a project to repurpose the pump or all of it.
I need one of the wizards to point me in the right direction - a bit of Xmas fun…

Hey there @John230847, welcome back to the forums!

To clarify… you’ve got this old monitor with a bunch of seemingly working parts and you’re looking for something to repurpose it into?

Sounds like fun! A good Xmas project indeed.

To start, lets do an audit of sorts; what parts do you have? From my end it looks like:

  • A pump (looks like a liquid pump)
  • A 7-segment display with a fair bit of room to work with
  • A control board for the specific device

As I’m sure you’re aware, we have a multitude of projects, both user and employee made, on our website. It may be worth looking through these projects and seeing what you could repurpose it into!

Curious to see other people’s suggestions, I know plenty of people repurpose old tape players into guitar amplifiers, so I bet someone out there knows the perfect thing to turn this into.

Being a blood pressure monitor it is more likely to be air.

The chip looks like it is an AMD micro controller, highly customised and preprogrammed. Hard to make it do anything other than what AMD designed it to do. Looking a a data sheet from Analog Devices for a similar chip; they use a PIC controller which is most likely one time programmable.

I know it would be nice to make it do something different but it might end up being impossible.

Had a similar experience when trying to get an old SONOS to work. Being an old device, SONOS no longer supported it so it was pretty much useless. Buy a new one they said. It quickly became clear there was not much I could salvage from the SONOS, it was annoying and I will not buy any more of there products although they are excellent.

Good Luck, I don’t see an way of making it do something different.
You could use it to bubble air through a fish tank but you would have to over come the pressure sensor readings the device would be looking for. If it does not get valid readings it stops.

Jim

Hi jim and John
If you just connect the motor directly to some appropriate power source it should bubble away contentedly irrespective of anything else.

Might be the only bit worth salvaging. Screen maybe but this looks like a purpose made item.

Hi Zach, and others

tks for the replies

the other comments seem correct that its only the pump that is otherwise useful.

I have exploded on old ballon

There is a sensor that causes the pressure to drop slowly to measure diastolic value.

I think its such a waste to toss it into the bin

I’ve gone through some of your projects - I need inspiration!

That monitor’s begging for a second life! How about turning it into a retro PC or a cool ambient light? If you’re into electronics, you could even salvage parts for another project. Let the holiday creativity begin
