Submersible DC motor

Does anyone know of a dc motor that can work completely underwater?

I have done some research and found that brushless dc motors can work or waterproofed/sealed motors.

Can anyone recommend potential models? It deosnt have to be very powerful and ideally with a diameter no more than 30 or 40mm.

Hi BellAmi

These are normally attached to a pump and are quite common. The larger variety are used in deep wells or bores as no pump can lift more than about 32’ or 10 metres of liquid. The solution is to have the motor and pump in a complete unit and drop the lot down the well or bore. Smaller devices are used in fish tanks and ornamental features which is more like what you are after..

If you google ā€œsubmersible motorsā€ Amazon have a sponsored link which offers 4 submersible pumps (3 - 5V) for $20 while others are a bit expensive. Depends on exactly what you want.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your quick reply, bt its not a pump that im looking for, just a regular motor.

Would this wor?

Hi BellAmi

That might make your search a bit harder.

I have no idea.

As a matter of interest what are you going to do with a submerged motor if you are not going to pump liquid.

If we knew something about this it would probably make any suggestions easier.

I want to drive a propellor that will be completely submerged.

I thought of maybe doing something like on a rc boat where the motor is inside the boat driving the propeller but there has to be some sort of seal to protect the motor from water but then I though if finding a motor that can be completel submerged so the only item I would need to worry about keeping dry are its control wires.

Hi BellAmi
Are you looking to drive a model boat or a real one.
The Tesla link looks OK but how waterproof. You would have to research.
The bottom link would probably drive a small real boat. That is over 1 horsepower. I just note the rated power is 540W which is about 2/3 hp.
The link does not give a physical size but it is pretty light at 280g. You would need a hefty power supply for this one I think.

You would have to advise what you need to drive like size etc and exactly what you want and how much per you have available. You have got a couple of links. I would not be able to do better I don’t think as I have had no experience at this sort of thing so have no suggestions off the top of my head I am afraid.
