Unexpected maker

Hi Core.

If I follow this link ESP32-S3 - The new flagship MCU from Espressif I can see the UM boards in Core’s shop but searching directly in the Core shop for UM doesn’t seem to work? What am I doing wrong?

Hey there, @Mark285907,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Unfortunately, you’re not doing anything wrong, that page seems to have completely escaped its pen. In this case, it appears that the ‘Unexpected Maker’ page has found itself beneath the ‘brands’ category which currently is not being used and returns a 404 Error.

I’m going to make an improvement to fix that up, but until then the below URL will be the easiest way to find them:

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately, searching for the brand is a limitation of the system we use in the backend.
I’ve sent feedback through to try and get this updated.

We all love Seon’s boards here, and make sure they are represented - so a lot of them live at the top of categories like development boards: Development Boards Australia

In the meantime, I’ve added some keywords to help out and push UM to where they should be.
Liam

EDIT: Clarified brands, not boards

From the outside it looked like the issue is the UM brand is not listed and not searchable?

Hi Mark,

My appologies, yes - unfortunately there are limitations on searching the brand, I had my wires crossed in my last reply.
The fix this morning ought to have pulled all UM products higher in search: https://core-electronics.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?order=bestsellers&q=unexpected+maker

While the brand is listed, and accessible by clicking on the brand link next to the SKU. I’m not certain if brands are taken into account in search - if not I’ll send a suggestion to our software team.

We’re working on a lot of cool stuff behind the scenes! If you ever need a hand tracking down a part I’d highly suggest hopping into the chat

Hi Liam
While you are at it what about doing something with the rest of the site.
For instance I just did a search for “USB Cables” and came up with 1388 hits. Unfortunately not all are “USB Cables”, some are nothing to do with USB at all.

Example of the first (25 items) page.
Item 2 12 Robots
Item 3 Banana to Banana leads
Item 6 Banana to IC hooks leads
Item 7 USB Step up boost converter
Item 9 TinyFX 2-Pin cables
Item 10 TinyFX 2-Pin cables
Item 12 DC-DC USB 0.9V-5V to 5V DC Boost Step-up Power Supply Module
Item 14 XT30 Adapter Cables – XT60 to XT30 Adapter
Item 16 [Large Single Row Housing Pack for DIY Jumper Cables]
Item 17 Dual-Port Power Bank with Digital Display and Integrated Cables - 10AH
Item 18 SanDisk USB 3.0 MobileMate MicroSD Reader/Writer for MicroSD cards
Item 19 [Small Single Row Wire Housing Pack for DIY Jumper Cables]
Item 22 Industrial USB to RS485 Converter
Item 23 [3.5mm Stereo Male/Male Cables - Black Metal - 1 meter long]

Not bad eh! 14 of the 25 items have nothing to do with USB cables.
This really means that to ascertain if Core stocks a particular USB cable you might have to trawl through 1388 items. Leave me out of it. I would be very tempted to look elsewhere after few pages of this sort of thing.

Some searches group most of the items at the front then pages of completely irrelevant bits and then a couple more of what you need.

I think the search system needs a bit of TLC. Don’t you ???
Cheers Bob

Add on: There are olly 8 (out of 25) USB “cables” on page 2.

Thanks Liam.

Wasn’t a complaint, more an observation…

Robert I agree totally about the search engine … your problem was that you used more than one keyword. I believe that it does a search for “USB” OR “cables”, not the phrase “USB cables” or “USB” AND “cables” that we assume.

Surely the business objective is to allow customers to find the product they are looking for quickly and with minimal resource used ?

Hi Donald
I don’t know just how the search engine goes about its task. I would imagine if you just searched on “USB” you would get everything in stock that had anything vaguely like USB use, likewise if you searched “cables”. Can you imagine someone like Element 14 who had over 70000 line items in stock 35 years ago. Don’t know what the present number is. Their filtering is pretty good so the search field can be narrowed considerably.

Of course this comparison is quite unfair. I imagine exotic search software is pretty expensive and has to be justified and Element 14 is just a tad larger company than Core so one would sympathise a bit here but having the user provide his or her own filtering must take some of the load from the search engine I would think.

Hi Donald
There is another way to defeat this annoying search engine.

If you know some details about the part you are looking for enter this into your Browser or Google search bar.

You should be presented with a drop down list of search suggestions

Select the most appropriate one and let the search begin.

If Core have something in stock you should see a link somewhere near the top of the list.

Click on this link and lo and behold---- the item you are looking for.

Works most of the time. Google is doing the searching

Hi Donald
Add on to above
Just tried something using “USB Cable” (without quotes) in the browser search bar.
Second item down the list of results was a link to Core Electronics, Sub headed “USB Cables Australia”
Selected this and guess what. USB cables and USB cables ONLY. None of the other non relevant junk. Total of 74 cables and nothing else.

Makes you wonder.
Cheers Bob
