This converter should work just fine for charging a standard lead-acid 12V car battery, that’s why the 13.8V output level was chosen as this is typically around what your alternator will output.

Hi, I was wondering if this unit would be suitable to charge a second aux (house) battery on our boat using the stock alternator as the source?

Hi Bruce,

That converter should be suitable for your traditional lead-acid 12V battery, but may not work well with some Lithium chemistry batteries.
The input can handle between 8 and 40 Volts DC so your alternator should be fine as a source.
