18650 battery suitable for Raspberry Pi 5 18650 Battery UPS HAT

I want to purchase a Raspberry Pi 5 18650 Battery UPS HAT.
One of the warnings says “Do not use 18650 battery with built-in protection circuit”

Are the 18650 battery’s listed on the web site ok to use ??

Regards
Jim

EDIT: The DFRobot web page does not have this warning.

Hi James
some time ago I contacted Core about the inability of the cell holders they marketed to accept18650 cells with built in protection. These cells are very difficult and mostly almost impossible to fit. Turns out that although labelled 18650 they can be up to 69 or even 70mm in length. Hence the difficulty.

I was informed that ALL cells stocked by Core WILL fit these holders and are 65mm long. I assume from that that ALL cells stocked by Core do not have this protection circuit built in.

Worth checking again though as I did not specifically ask this question.
Cheers Bob

Thanks for your reply @Robert93820.

The Ups page lists the battery holder length as 65.3mm max.
The battery page lists the length as 65mm.

So I am happy they will fit, the warning is what worried me initially.
Forgot that protection circuit ones are longer.

Hi @James46717 and @Robert93820 ,

Neither of those cells have battery protection circuits. You are right to use either of them but I recommend the ones without solder tabs for the UPS HAT.

@Jack Thanks for your reply I have ordered a board and non tag batteries,

I also have one of the Pi 5 AI boards and look forward to operating it in a mobile situation. Following Jarad’s tutorial on interfacing the board with python.

I will have it mounted on a robot cart to try and track people movement in the house and object identification. The cart is already built and controlled independent to the Pi 5.

Cheers
Jim
