Chemical Binary Communication

So let’s hear it for pointless but fun projects right? Building things just for the sake of a cool project is the very essence that the maker community is built on. Now, in our modern era, we’re well versed in the effective digital communication that phones and computers provide, but what about using that technology to create a slightly different form of communication? Well, a group of Stanford researchers have done just that by creating a chemical transmission system to send binary data. In fairness, it’s not a pointless concept, but one which shows the potential for digital communication in chemical systems such as the human body. It uses an Arduino to send small quantities of base/acid compounds and the monitors the pH difference to determine whether a 1 or a 0 was sent. It’s a fantastic merging of DIY hardware like Arduino to bring conceptual ideas to life!
