Greetings my Learned Friends,
I’ve been going around in circles trying to find the answer to this through my own research and failed miserably.
I’m trying to identify the connector type and ‘proper’ mating connector for the I2C interface on the DFrobot DFR0154 I2C/TWI LCD2004 Module (Arduino/Gadgeteer Compatible)
For my bench testing, I’ve just bodgied in some female DuPont jumpers but would like the proper connector for my final product.
I’m sure someone will be able to tell me and/or point me to a suitable connector here or elsewhere.
Best regards
Frewster
Hi Frewster
Welcome
Try Googling “what connector is that” and you will come up with plenty of hits
Right on top is this one
which should keep you happy for a while. Of course this is aimed at selling the book but there seems to be a fair bit of free info there. A bit disjointed but if you can’t get details another site might be better.
Of course DFRobot will tell you nothing. Annoys me no end that does to the extent I usually purchase something else.
Cheers Bob
DFRobot typically use their “Gravity” standard for i2c … which would be a JST PH 2.0mm connector with pins for 3v3/5v - GND - SCL (blue) - SDA (green)
… however …
That image doesn’t look to me like the typical Gravity connector. It looks as though it is expecting some latch, which the JST PH connectors don’t have. Quite possibly this product pre-dates their Gravity specification.
A quick search on the DFRobot.com website takes us to I2C 20x4(2004) LCD Display for Arduno - DFRobot, which states “All connector are standard XH2.54 (Breadboard type). You can connect it with jumper wire directly.”, and there is a customer review which comments of the difficulty of connecting to it.
Based on only this info, your bodgied DuPont jumpers may be as good as you’ll get.
Hey Bob,
Thanks for the reply. I had stumbled upon that website and browsing through it sort of pointed me to the JST suite but nothing quite the same.
I take it from your comments that DFrobot are perhaps a bit obscure with the important details for their products?
I’d pull it off and replace it with something more standard if I could be bothered but it seems like too much effort to desolder the backpack from the LCD.
Cheers

Hey Donald,
Thanks for the reply. I found some info about the Gravity but I think you’re right that this predates it.
I’ve got an assortment of JST connectors forthcoming but I think as you say, the DuPont jumpers might be the ultimate solution.
Cheers man

Hi Frewster
I have been digging into my grey matter over the last couple of days.
That connector seems to have a 2.54mm pin pitch. Looks like it by comparing visually with the header strip down the side of the board and also the jumper pins near the blue pot. These I know are 2.54mm
I would lean toward Molex as somewhere to look. It almost looks a bit like an automotive type.
If you are confidant with crimping you may have some success with the 4 way female housings and the crimp pins to go with it. Sold by Core. If you are using the Dupont type jumper wires now this should fit as I think what you have got is a single version of the 4 way bit.
Be a bit careful of wire size here. I found that local (Aust) wire has insulation thickness somewhat larger than the imported wire from the USA and the overall diameter is too large to go into the square hole in the 4 way housing if the wire gauge is too great. As a matter of interest our specs call for insulation thickness of 0.6mm and the USA stuff is much thinner. Most American stuff like A/V switchers and Broadcast Transmitters etc that I had dealings in my working life had to have ALL of the 240V mains wiring replaced to meet our 0.6mm standard. A bit of a pain but had to be done.
Cheers Bob
Maybe this one is close ? Note: you would need to check the numbers.

Hi Michael, Frewster
That looks very much like the one. This one is the board mount, Frewster you need the mating female. If you follow Michael’s link you will get all the details including the all important series type.
Cheers Bob
I was right. It looks like it is Molexx.
Hey,
Looks like we have a winner! Well done Gentlemen.

My initial reseach did lead me to the Molex website but I never dug down deep enough to find the actual connector.
I might need to add a couple to my next order.
Thanks to all who helped.
