Have issue where Raspberry Pi seems to boot, but stops on a rainbow (heat map) screen that consumes the entire screen. On one occasion, it actually booted, but a later attempt ends with the rainbow screen, so seems inconsistent.

Do you have a micro-SD card inserted? You’ll need to load an OS using the Raspberry Pi installer and a loaded micro SD card to the slot to boot up your Pi.

Yes the sd cardwas installed. Are you thinking the os is corrupt?

Possibly or the micro-SD is not all the way in, are you able to send through a photo of the bottom of your Pi?
PS: you can also boot from USB if you have a Pi 4
