PD Power Extension Board for Raspberry Pi 5 (TPH-EP-0225)

This is a placeholder topic for “PD Power Extension Board for Raspberry Pi 5” comments.

The PD Power Expansion board from 52Pi is a multi-feature power management solution for Raspberry Pi 5. The board offers a range of power input options,…

G’day, could you please confirm the DC interface size for this board? The Core Electronics website lists it as 4.0 mm × 1.7 mm, while the wiki specifies 1.3 mm × 4.2 mm.

I purchased the board from a different supplier and found that a 4.0 mm × 1.7 mm plug fits snugly (overlapping tolerances); however, electrical contact with the centre pin only occurs intermittently and sometimes only when the plug is rotated. This does not seem typical for a correctly matched barrel connector. Measuring the centre pin on my 52Pi board with inexpensive verniers/calipers gives approximately 1.3 mm at the top.

Are the units supplied by Core Electronics different from those described in the wiki, or is there a documentation error? If the connector is indeed, 1.3 mm × 4.2 mm, and I haven’t stuffed up, it is a very consumer unfriendly design choice, as I have been unable to find a readily available matching male plug.

Hi Ken
If you measured the centre pin as 1.3mm then probably 1.3mm it is.
The only plug I can find with 1.3mm centre is an outer diameter of 3.5.
Even Element 14 only list 1 plug of 1.3mm and it has an outer dimension of 3.5mm.
I think that if Element 14 have not got something then it does not exist. I know this is stretching it a bit but hey, they keep an amazing inventory.

I really don’t know why there is a conflict with things like this (and others) but it happens all too often. A bit sloppy I think. There does not seem to be any checking going on. The vendor descriptions look like a verbatim copy of the manufacturers splurge or Wiki so if there is a glaring mistake on one it will nearly always appear on the other.

But this seems to be the opposite. There is a difference between the vendor and manufacturer.

Hey @Kenji310172 , welcome to the forums!

It seems like this connector may have been changed in past board revisions, which has led to some conflicting information between the product page and the product wiki.

I measure our current stock of these boards as having a pin size of 1.3mm and a hole diameter of around 4mm. Most DC barrel connectors, like the one on this board, have a metal ‘spring’ that holds the outside of the connector in place and allows a bit of wiggle room when sizing the outer diameter of this connection. The inner pin normally needs to be exactly sized to fit.

A 1.3mm internal and 3.5 to 4.2mm external diameter jack should be the best suited for this particular board. I will let our team know of the error on our product page and make sure we get this updated as soon as possible.
