Pi Zero W released the magic smoke!

My recently purchased Pi Zero W just got hot and released smoke from what appears to be the Processor.

Any ideas as to what I might have done wrong?

It was in a Plastic enclosure and was working fine. I unplugged it and re-plugged it back into to its 5V supply and boom - magic smoke. I can’t see any damaged components, but every time I plug it back in the Processor gets super hot before I quickly unplug it again.

I’ve ordered a replacement, but I’m reluctant to fire it up until I know what I did wrong.

Hi Jason,

I the most likely cause of smoke release is a short somewhere on the board or running at over voltage. Though Overvoltage from the USB supply seems unlikely as you have said the CPU itself cooked and over supply from usb would have killed the regulator. My guess would be there is something shorted on the board maybe a piece of metal or wire in that fell into the case. though this is a pretty wild guess.
