Recommendations for a display

Hi everyone,

I am protyping a system that will use a remote control.

I would love to market this product (specifc sports timer) if all goes well but its a very niche market, the competitors products come from overseas and cost about 8k for 2 timers and 1 controlling remote yet probably contain about $100 worth of parts  . But the market is very small, there would be lucky to be 150 units in the country

I am using a raspberry pi pico as the microcontroller and piicodev transmitters for the comms.

Initially i used a 20x4 i2c LCD diplay but wanted something that just looked a little more modern. I tried some oleds 128 x 64 but the result was’nt really that good and some research left me with doubts about longevity and suitablilty of the oled outdoors. The 20x4 LCDs are pretty bulky and ive just got a few cheaper ones so they really dont look that professional.

Any recommendation for a budget friendly display. Theres no need for touch interfaces or even any fancy graphics, except perhaps a battery life indicator but I dont want it to look like something hacked together in 1960 (even though its something hacked together  )

thanks
Darren

OLED is pretty much the goto for modern-looking displays. Can you describe the display you looked at and what you thought was unsatisfactory about it?

Longevity is largely dependent on the mounting and enclosure. OLEDs certainly need a solid mounting, and it should be covered with a suitable transparent material for outdoor use.

For use in sunlight LCD is usually preferred. It is brighter and more resistant to UV. This style is commonly used for consumer and small industrial devices and should have good availability:
Graphic LCD 128x64 Module for Arduino

Note that the interface used for that example is nor specified, and may not be suitable for your application. However it is likely that versions are available with IIC or SPI. For instance, try searching on IIC LCD Module 128X64.

You can use a Monochrome Graphic LCD (128x64 ST7565 or 240x128).

Hey @Darren130430 ,

I find myself landing on a 128x64 OLED display for most of my projects and have never had any issues with OLED displays specifically. OLED won’t be the easiest display to make out in direct sunlight, but it will look great in most conditions and will be more power efficient than an equivalent LCD display.

I would recommend the SSD1306 for a smaller display with a sharper image and the SSD1309 for situations where you want a bigger screen.

Hope this helps!
