I am hoping to create a kids soft toy that incorporates this game.

If you take a look through the code and at the pin usage table you notice that 10 pins are defined so that will narrow down the Lilypad boards we can use.
Personally I would use a Lilypad 328 with the accompanying FTDI programmer.
