Done! I uploaded the new Firmware using the connections Oliver suggested which worked first time!
The Serial LCD started with an array full of “||” characters on both lines which was unexpected. I put the 328 back in my Arduino, then loaded the Hello World sketch. Which ran OK. However, it seems to default to a 24x4 display. I just need to use setup to initialise for my 16x2 display.

As I suspected, it was not a hardware issue.
Now we all know it’s possible to corrupt the Firmware &/ or Bootloader code by sending gobbledigook to the display.
