Ubuntu mate will boot from usb ports

simple flash Ubuntu desktop to your media making shore you have the boot-loader eeprom setup to boot from usb

follow standard setup procedures for a working opp system
next use copy paste for commands from here …below

open a terminal as root user
sudo apt update && apt full-upgrade

sudo apt install ubuntu-mate-desktop*
answer yes to start the download of packages and just follow the prompts…
there will be a few prompts use your judgement none of them are the incorrect answers in general… i just keep the standard or defaults when prompted…however when asked for a display manager i choose “lightdm”…after that its a simple standard setup…

once the code is finished
reboot

you will be greeted by the display manager in the login box there is a round circle …left click on it and choose mate for the default desktop…enter your password then enjoy…it will now boot of usb stick …not like the latest Ubuntu mate also use the 64 bit version of 20-10 and if you desire upgrade it to 21-04…you may wish to update as well just run the update code i wrote above …in a term as root

all the working features that you would expect are there in the menu to the left of screen… for more info go to the Ubuntu website and read the wiki etc…

just post under here if i can be of more help…

Hi Brian,

Very informative post, how are you going with your clock speeds?

Liam.

its hard with all the miss information ,well today i read that ubuntu mate desktop would not boot from usb …but yet here i am running it of usb…well it does indeed boot but its a rather small image size compared to the 8.7 gig Ubuntu desktop ape face… i still think your better of with my way much more has been done …and all updates and upgrades work as though they should that i have found.
so why am i seeing rubbish is it a service provider problem more than likely…

just put together my argon one M-2 case its neat but have not installed the fan software as yet running of usb stick at pres but nice so far temps are under 45 degs approx without the cooler and the cpu is clocked at 2200 and over volt of 8 gpu is 750… …but ok working browsing is ok.had been using it with libre elec and Netflix sitting there on table with the blue heatsink on top no fan it sits around 35 degs…mostly…there really good sinks they dissipate really well …

ok today i just flashed 21.04 Ubuntu desktop…on an m-2 240 gig chip…
apt update …etc usual install ok to change from the hippo desktop to ubuntu mate…

apt purge ubuntu-desktop*
apt install ubuntu-mate desktop*

i use light DM as a display manager
when prompted it was the only question i got asked during the desktop upgrade…
after the code has finished type reboot

open a terminal after the reboot and start as super user…
apt auto remove

reboot

reopen a terminal as root
i edited the config.txt and set the cpu stats…2200 seems to be their sweet spot…also up the top you can add a temp gauge simply by adding to the top panel click and open a command prompt from the menu in the add to panel…

in the text box type
cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
close that and you should see the temp of the cpu up the top…

arm_freq=2200
over_voltage=8

gpu=*
set to 500 or leave blank omit that is i men set it to 500 on mine…not running any case just an argon 40 fan and a heat sink flat black ribbed 40x20

up the top panel open the cpu frequency monitor its basically the governor control
it will be set to default but you have to set it after every reboot or start up …my kernel rebuild is limited…but you can re-flash the kernel if you know how and set it to what you require…

reboot enjoy…

footnote i set in the software updater for source code and the conical options in their also…dont touch um…
additional dev updates unless your prepared to expect it will most likely case crashes and discomfort to your usb ports…etc…etc…
