Weekly Maker News December Week 1

Welcome to our weekly maker news where we wrap up some fun and interesting stories in the maker world from the last few weeks. The video will come out on Fridays, but we are posting a topic here on Wednesdays to post the video’s sources and to collect any news from the community to potentially include in next week’s as well as just open up general discussion.

This week we looked at:

Raspberry Pi releasing the long-awaited compute module 5 with Jeff Geerling reporting that it is nearly a drop-in replacement for your compute module 4 projects. It brings the same 2-3x performance increase - similar to the step up from a Pi 4 to a Pi 5, and comes in a variety of different RAM and eMMC sizes. It also sports the D0 processor stepping like the 2GB Pi 5 - a chip revision that runs cooler and uses about 33% less power.

Raspberry Pi also recently announced the Pico 2W, the wireless variant of their Pico 2 which is the second generation of their wildly successful microcontroller range. The board comes with all the features of the Pico 2 including a 2-3 times faster processor, double the amount of RAM and a wealth of security features, but it also comes with well wireless, exactly like the original Pico W. We have been eagerly waiting for this board for a while to get that Pico 2 performance in wireless projects.

And valve has updated their Steam Link software package to extend support to the Pi 5 and Bookworm OS. This now allows you to stream Steam games from your computer to your Pi 5 over a network, and you can even connect your controllers directly to your Pi. Valve developer Slouken has confirmed support on the Pi 5 for up to 240HZ at 1080p and 60HZ at 4k. From some of our own testing, we were able to get 120HZ at 1080p with 8 PS5 controllers connected, all over wifi with very little latency.

If you have any news from the maker world, feel free to post it below and we may include it in next week’s video, until then we will see you next week!
