3.5 pannel mount earpiece jack

I want to add a 3.5mm audio jack to a security device.

This device only has a speaker output so I want to be able to plug in a mono earpiece when I don’t want the audio to come through the speaker.

What sort of jack do I need and where do I get such?

It has to be a panel mount with a nut and thread and solder connectors.

Thanks

Hi Glen
Welcome
If Core don’t have such a thing try Jaycar or Altronics.
You will need a device with a built in switch to remove the speaker from circuit when using earpiece.
Just looked and Core do have one. SKU ADA4361.

Unless you have a special I think most ear pieces commonly in use would be stereo. I think this jack can be used with such an ear piece and the sound comes from the left ear which would normally be the tip to sleeve circuit on the stereo plug. That is the mono jack provides the tip to sleeve circuit (the stereo jack would have the tip to sleeve and ring to sleeve circuits)

You want a 3.5 mm (1/8") panel-mount mono switched jack socket.

Look for one with threaded bushing and mounting nut, solder lugs/tags, mono, 2-conductor jack, normally-closed switching contact and panel-mount construction.

The switching contact is useful here. With no plug inserted, the speaker remains connected. When you insert the earpiece, the internal switch disconnects the speaker.

A part such as the CLIFF CL1382 is the sort of connector you are looking for. It is a panel-mount 3.5 mm mono jack with switched solder contacts.

However, check the security device’s speaker circuit before wiring it. If its amplifier output is bridged/BTL, don’t assume the speaker negative terminal is ground. You may need to switch both speaker leads or use a suitable isolation/interface circuit. For connector sourcing, Unikeyic helps buyers check MPNs, datasheets, compatible parts, and RFQ details.

You also need to check the jack’s contact rating against the amplifier’s output before installing it.

Hi Glen
Thanks from all for the confirmation of success. Unfortunately there are quite a few that don’t bother either way.
