Hi Shane,

Whilst you can absolutely hook up a display (I’d recommend a small HDMI screen - HDMI is designed for longer distances like one end of a wheelchair to another), distance will be a bit harder. You could absolutely hook up a small speaker to that screen via the 3.5mm port, and sense distance with something like our PiicoDev Laser Distance sensor:

Either way, it’ll need a bit of coding nouse

Let me know if this sparks any followup questions!

Hi James
sounds perfect could it all run off one power supply?
could those speaker’s play music and could I hook up a larger speaker to hook up a lip reading pi to speak for me lol sorry this is how my brain works

Yep, you could likely plug the display into a USB port on the Pi. Just make sure you have enough current for it all (3A at least)

I don’t see why not, but again it’d be up to you to assemble the software side of things. My brain goes to projects like Volumio.

it is all going. on my. wheelchair if I get a cable put at the back to run it all. what would you recomend leaving room for upgrades?
OI could run a spare 12v battery?

Hi Shane,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner!

If this is the kind of project you see getting continual upgrades, definitely leave some room!

To be able to run your Pi from a 12V battery you’ll need a step-down regulator like this: Pololu 5V, 5.5A Step-Down Voltage Regulator D36V50F5 | POLOLU-4091 | Core Electronics Australia (requires soldering)

Taking the project one step at a time will definitely be the way to go
