Raspberry Pi 4B - No audio over HDMI

Hi,

Recent purchase of the Raspberry Pi from Core. I am using the device with PlayoutBee (video play out device) however I cannot get audio over HDMI.

I have searched for solutions however nothing has worked. 3.5 mm jack works and so does a USB headphone amp on VLC, Chrome and FireFox.
I am sure there is a simple fix as I have been debugging on a vanilla version of the OS.

Any help appreciated.

Hi there, @Craig303545, and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here.

Would you be able to upload a picture of the device and how everything is wired together? The Raspberry Pi 4B actually has two mini-HDMI ports and some users have stated that only only the port closest to the Power Supply has audio.

Hi Jane, I will do. I can confirm I am using HDMI port 0 (closest to USB power) after reading same in forums

Hey @Craig303545,

What device are you trying to play audio through? Some HDMI monitors don’t correctly advertise their audio capability, so the Pi doesn’t enable it. A quick test is to plug into a TV or another HDMI display, if you get sound there, your original display likely has an EDID compatibility issue.

If you’re sure the display should support audio, try forcing HDMI output. Open a terminal and run:

sudo raspi-config

Then going to System Options → Audio and explicitly setting HDMI as the output may work.

There’s also an older forum thread here where user Optimavisi seemed to have success in Nov 2020 by running

sudo apt update
sudo apt -y purge "pulseaudio"

This may be outdated by now.
