The Raspberry Pi kit I purchased last week comes up with the following error when booting
1.194615 —[ end Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,2)
Not sure how to proceed to fix this issue

Hi Matt,
It sounds like something may have gone wrong on the first boot, such as a power interruption or the like. You can repair the filesystem by following this guide (note the tips about the number that is on the end of the error line):
