Unable to boot Pi Zero W

I purchased the board in October last year and was able to use it with and without the v2 camera up until the last couple of weeks. Now I am unable to boot it despite substituting various SD cards. The green LED does not light. Static electricity is unlikely, especially given the moist atmosphere we have experienced since November. The Pi Zero 2W that I purchased continues to work using the same power supply.

Hi Alan,

Shame to hear you’re experiencing troubles on your Pi. Is there anything else you have done to troubleshoot?

There’s a green LED on the board. Does that flash in any particular pattern when powered?

This will generally give you an indication of what has occurred. Let me know how you go.

If you can plug it into a screen it might give some indication.
I had an experience with a Pi 4B where the firmware or something had somehow corrupted.

There was a process to follow to reset it. You made a boot SD card that you ran once to fixed the Pi.
I think it was from the Raspberry Pi Corporation documentation web site.

If you think this may be the problem I can try find the link.
If you get nothing on the screen the Pi Zero might well be stuffed.

Its the fastest indication and always worth checking.

I agree with James, if the led does nothing hopefully some error is displayed on boot.

Hi Jack
If this is the power LED indicator (I don’t know) it is not going to show much of anything if there is no power.

Hi Bob,

There is a Green LED on the Pi Zero which indicates activity, it is mostly on after booting and flashes as the Pi does stuff. The first time it comes on is when it checks the SD card.
In @Alan255738’s case it does not come on at all, indicating a SD card or reader problem.

@Alan255738 This might be a good place to start, third post. There are some things you can do to check if the board is fried or not.

In my previous post I referenced the Pi 4B, which has a boot EEPROM, the Pi Zero does not have this, it just reads stuff from the SD card to boot. So what I suggested it not a possible fix.

G’day Jack, the green LED on the board shows no activity at any stage.

@Alan255738 Did some checking.

No SD card the green LED remains off.
SD card with no Pi OS on it the LED remains off.

If you are using correctly formatted SD cards loaded with the Pi OS that work on other Pi’s, then the LED should show some activity. If not it means the SD card slot is faulty. I’d examine it closely for damage.

Thanks Jim, I read your excellent post and tried the USB connection to the PC. No joy, so I can only assume I have a fried Pi.

Hey Alan,

Quite possibly, although there are a few potential causes for a Pi popping or getting bricked. Can you please reply to the order confirmation email that you’ve got from the support team at Core Electronics?

The team will see whether there’s anything else that can be done to troubleshoot the issue and sort out an appropriate resolution for you from there.

In the meantime, to throw in my 2c, if you’ve got a multimeter handy, I’d suggest checking your 3.3V and 5V rails against ground on the GPIO. A few times I’ve seen boards with massive overvoltage on the 3.3V line, or are just outright dead, the times I have it was usually from an overheated regulator, a short, or caused from a reverse voltage from a defective HAT (like some of the old POE hats) just cooking the Pi:
